We hope that you all are well as the health and safety of our SBL community continues to be our top priority. Thank you for your continued patience as the SBL Board navigates through this unprecedented situation. It is our intention to communicate answers to questions that you may have, share insight into our decision-making process, and provide options as a result of recent decisions.
Since our last communication, the Governor of Virginia issued a statewide Stay at Home order on March 30, 2020. The executive order took place immediately and will remain in place until June 10, 2020. This order is intended to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. Prior to that announcement, Stafford County had shut down all parks and recreation facilities through May 30. While the possibility exists that the governor’s order could be rescinded earlier, the order could also be expanded beyond June 10 due to the fluid nature of the pandemic.
Stafford Baseball League is chartered within Babe Ruth League which represents over 1,000,000 athletes in all 50 states. Through this charter we receive insurance for officials, volunteers, and the players that participate in SBL. In accordance with this charter, we also are afforded the opportunity to send athletes in the summer to represent Stafford County in the Babe Ruth Tournament Trail which is similar to that of Little League. This trail starts with local play and ends with a World Series for each age group. At this time, it is the goal of Babe Ruth League to proceed with the tournament trail this summer. Babe Ruth League will also continue monitoring the ongoing situation. They are expected to make a determination on whether or not to have this tournament trail by May 15.
Stafford Baseball League, like many other recreational leagues, has done everything it can to prepare for the spring season and has spent money accordingly. Thankfully the SBL Board acted early on this crisis to minimize monies spent, and the league will be able to absorb the inevitable financial loss for the Spring season. That said, we assure you that when the kids are able to play baseball in 2020, SBL will be there and ready to go as we have been for more than a quarter century.
We also realize that these unprecedented life events have impacted some of our families more than others. This has required the SBL Board to look at this situation from all angles and offer different options to the many questions and hopefully a solution to others.
Please note that we HAVE NOT canceled the spring/summer season. The SBL Board is committed to doing whatever it takes to getting our kids back on the field. It is our deepest hope, that if afforded the opportunity, that we can provide some semblance of a 2020 spring/summer season for the kids.
We realize that all of our families have unique situations and one possible message/outcome cannot satisfy all at this time. It is for this reason that the SBL Board has decided to offer the following options.
Option 1: Wait it Out - This option is to continue to wait in anticipation that SBL will have a spring/summer season. By doing so, once SBL is allowed to play ball, your child will immediately resume activities with a team and games will begin shortly thereafter under a modified schedule. This option also allows athletes to be eligible for the Babe Ruth Tournament Trail.
Should SBL be forced to cancel the season at a later date, all of the options below will still be afforded to you.
All of the following options require further action. Please click on the link below: (fill out the form, select your option and hit SUBMIT)
Option 2: CREDIT - This option removes your child from the spring/summer season. 100% of the funds paid will remain in your SBL account as a credit for a future season (Fall 2020 or Spring 2021). These funds will be applied at the time of registration for one of the aforementioned seasons. Credit must be used by June 1, 2021. By choosing this option, your child will be removed from the Spring/Summer registration roster and will not be eligible to play if there is a season or eligible for the Babe Ruth Tournament Trail.
Option 3: DONATION - This option allows families to donate 100 % of the fees paid to SBL for the 2020 spring season in lieu of participating in the spring/summer season (if applicable). These funds will be used to offset the costs in preparation for the 2020 spring season and to fund the SBL Financial Aid program that provides assistance on future registration fees for children of families that may not have the requisite funds to participate in SBL. The account holder will receive an acknowledgement of your donation to SBL which is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. By choosing this option, your child will be removed from the spring/summer registration roster and will not be eligible to play if there is a season or eligible for the Babe Ruth Tournament Trail.
Option 4: Refund - This final option requests a refund for your 2020 spring registration fees. While SBL incurs a financial cost with every registration, we will honor a 100% refund to our families that request this option. Again, by doing so, your child will be removed from the spring/summer registration roster and will not be eligible to play if there is a season or eligible for the Babe Ruth Tournament Trail. Please note: The potential for volume on these requests will be unprecedented for us as a volunteer Board. We assure you that we will get to all of these requests as quickly as possible. We thank you in advance for your patience as we process your requests.
As previously stated, we understand that one solution may not fit everyone. In an effort to be flexible and cover multiple solutions, the form below is for EACH PLAYER. This allows families to make unique decisions per player based on their circumstances.

We sincerely appreciate your continued patience and understanding. As a 100% volunteer board, we are doing everything we can to provide a glimmer of hope and be there for the kids of all ages when we have the green light to begin the season. We WILL play baseball in 2020! We sincerely hope that is soon and we see you all on the fields. Until that time, we must remain vigilant and continue to practice social distancing guidelines as a community.
